FAQs for eBooks

  • How are scanned books converted into eBooks?

The typical workflow is: Scan the book at 600 DPI to create TIFF master files. Run OCR to extract text, edit and correct the OCR output. Apply structural tagging (headings, paragraphs, lists). Export to EPUB and validate for distribution platforms. The quality of the original scan directly impacts eBook accuracy.

  • Will the OCR-generated Word or RTF file match my original book’s layout?

The OCR creates a text-based reconstruction, not a layout-preserved reproduction. The TIFF scans will mirror the original layout.

  • Can DSI convert my scanned TIFF files directly into an eBook-ready HTML or EPUB structure?

We output files to an RTF or MS Word formats. The file will have to reviewed and formatted before being converted to an EPUB format.

  • Does Digital Scanning create EPUB files?

Digital Scanning can process the TIFF files out as RTF, DOCX or TXT files. EPUB formatting, editorial cleanup, and distribution are handled as separate services by publishers or conversion specialists.

  • Can illustrations and images be included in eBooks?

Yes. Images scanned from the original book can be included, optimized, and anchored within the text. Image quality and placement depend on the original scan and the target eBook platform’s specifications.

  • Do eBooks require an ISBN?

The major online retailers require an ISBN for EPUB distribution. The eBook edition must have its own unique ISBN, separate from print editions.
